Special Education and Your Child, Part 1: Eligibility
We welcome VOPA (Virginia Office of Protection & Advocacy)!
VOPA is a state agency of attorneys and paralegals that focus on people with disabilities and civil rights.  They are an amazing and committed group of people that are dedicated to helping people with disabilities - whether it is Medicaid and DMAS or the school system and IEP's.  They are here for us!

The first in VOPA’s special education series, this presentation is largely intended for parents who are just starting with the special education process.  It will cover the evaluation process from making a request to the evaluation itself.  We will also discuss what happens if you disagree with the school’s evaluation and next steps.  Parents whose children have already been found eligible but are confused by the evaluation process may also find this presentation useful. The presentation will last approximately 45 minutes to an hour and presenter(s) will be available for questions afterwards.

Whether you are about to head into your first IEP Meeting or you are looking for tips and advice, this is the presentation for you!  The second in VOPA’s three part special education series, takes a look at what goes into an IEP.  We will also discuss scheduling and who should attend as well as brief summaries of Prior Written Notice and options for resolving disagreements.  The presentation will last approximately an hour and a half to two hours and presenter(s) will be available for questions afterwards.
